The battle for Hungary’s democratic future

Is Hungary`s democracy in danger? The Norwegian Helsinki Committee and Civita invite you to a breakfast meeting at Litteraturhuset Tuesday November 19th 8.00 – 9.00 am.

Breakfast meeting at Litteraturhuset Tuesday November 19th 8.00 – 9.00 am.

Many Europeans warn against the democratic erosion and the rise of illiberal populism in Hungary. Opponents of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán accuse him of leading his country towards an ever more authoritarian state, by attacking judicial independence, free media and civil society. His supporters claim he only executes the will of the people. Is Hungary`s democracy in danger? And how should the rest of Europe respond to the development in Hungary?

Panelists: Márta Pardavi, co-chair of the Hungarian Helsinki Committee, Jan Petersen, former Minister of Foreign Affairs and head of the referendum observation mission from the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Right, and Bjørn Engesland, Secretary General of The Norwegian Helsinki Committee.

This event is hosted in cooperation with The Norwegian Helsinki Committee

A Q&A session will follow after the introductions. The doors will open at 7.30 am.

The meeting will take place at Litteraturhuset in Oslo (Amalie Skram), Wergelandsveien 29.
